Designing a Pied-a-Terre in London by Alex Sherman
London Pied-A-Terre
Our client contacted us to help with the interior design of the pied-a-terre that she and her husband had recently purchased in Fulham. She spends most of the time in the Cotswolds and wanted a foothold in London. Our brief was to help to create a home from home leaning into the Victorian features that would be suitable for rental also.
Pink & Blue Colour Palette
We created a beautiful colour palette of mid-blues and pale plaster pinks, with accents of teal, cognac and raspberry mixed with natural wood tones. The teal and white cabinetry in the dining room was accessorised with traditional Spode pottery.
Living Room
Our client was working to a careful budget for this second home that was being considered for short term rentals as well as a base for family. Working in partnership, we found pieces from a variety of suppliers, including antique fairs and markets. She sourced a number of pieces of mahogany furniture. We mixed old and new in the sofa, armchair, stair-runner, rugs, soft-furnishings, artwork and decorative details.
Fabrics & Furnishings
The sofa is from sofa.com upholstered in a Fermoie fabric brought together with a considered collection of cushion fabrics. These are offset by the gorgeous Guy Goodfellow stripes on the curtains. Our talented Decorbuddi designer, Alex Sherman, painted this artwork to tie everything together.
Handmade Details
Alex is a maker as well as an interior designer. This enabled her to make perfect finishing pieces for her client. From the bespoke artwork in the living room to the upholstery, cushions and lampshades in the bedroom. The wonderful tassel-effect textured cushions waere achieved by using the back of a fabric remnant as the front.
Luxurious Layers
Alex hand-painted a simple lampshade, transforming it into a one-off original. The headboard was reupholstered and piped, lifting the master bedroom from Fulham apartment to boutique-hotel. Layer on layer of varying textures achieved a warm and welcoming touch of luxury. Alex also covered a couple of plain chairs in fabulous striped fabric.
Guest Bedroom
The blue and pink colour palette continues into the second bedroom, with an eclectic mix of furnishings, making it suitable for any age of visiting children or adults. The colour palette is designed to work with the original Victorian mosaic tiled hallway.
