Claygate
Surrey Refurbishment
Our client had been thinking about moving, due to lack of space. Then the next-door mews house became available and they decided that they would purchase it and use it for guest accommodation instead.
Decorbuddi was appointed to help design the layout and interior of the house and mews, ensuring that there was a cohesive look throughout – from the flooring to the bathrooms, lighting design, bespoke joinery drawings and selection of the furniture and furnishing details.

“Amanda is highly professional, responsive and reliable and her involvement has saved huge amounts of time and stress, whilst producing a far better result than we could have on our own. I loved her designs and felt she interpreted our taste and needs really well, whilst keeping a close eye on costs and budget. I would not hesitate to recommend Amanda and hope to work with her again on future house projects"
More About This Surrey Home & Mews House Renovation in Claygate
Set in the leafy village of Claygate, one of Surrey’s most desirable residential enclaves, this project included the interior design of the family home and neighbouring mews house. Claygate is known for its peaceful tree-lined avenues, thriving village community and charming architecture, making it a wonderful setting for a warm, welcoming interior.
Our Role in the Transformation
We provided a complete interior design service for this Surrey renovation, collaborating with the clients to establish a vision for the interior design across both properties. Our scope included floorplans, flooring specification, bathroom design, lighting concepts, bespoke joinery drawings, colour palettes, furnishing selections and all finishing touches.
The goal was to harmonise the old and new elements, creating an original, personal design for our clients. We worked closely with our team of craftspeople and joiners, designing custom storage solutions and architectural details - including recessed blinds hidden neatly out of sight — to elevate functionality without compromising aesthetics.
Creating a Cohesive Living Experience
The starting point for the design was the clients’ treasured collection of artwork and items gathered over time. These pieces provided the emotional foundation for our palette and styling choices, ensuring that both the house and the mews felt authentic, meaningful and collected rather than newly decorated.
In the kitchen, a single cherished ceramic fish plate served as the inspiration for the room’s muted colour story. Set above aquamarine tiles behind the range cooker, it anchors the scheme beautifully. We collaborated with a local bespoke kitchen company, to create a functional, carefully crafted space that suits the family’s everyday needs.
A Palette Inspired by Art & Personal Belongings
Throughout the ground floor we selected flooring that would set the tone for the entire home - a combination of durable porcelain stone-effect tiles in the kitchen (capable of withstanding muddy dog paws) and warm engineered wood for the living spaces. These choices blend practicality with elegance, grounding the design in warmth and texture.
Furniture was reimagined with care: existing pieces, such as the white sideboard, were repainted to reflect colours found in nearby artworks, ensuring cohesion and renewed relevance. Soft furnishings and decorative touches blend craftsmanship with comfort, supporting the calm, contemporary feel of the home.
Spatial Flow & Architectural Detailing
From the entrance hallway, we designed bespoke joinery in keeping with the architectural detailing, providing essential storage while maintaining a clean, uncluttered aesthetic. Painting the doors, architraves and skirting in the same tone as the walls created a seamless backdrop that draws the eye from the front of the house through to the extended kitchen and onward to the garden.
Mirrors, subtle bursts of colour and thoughtful lighting further enhance this flow, contributing to an uplifting sense of entrée that sets the stage for the rest of the home.
Living Spaces full of Warmth & Restraint
In the main living areas, we introduced a beautiful rug to define the zone and bring gentle texture underfoot. Rather than filling every corner with furniture, we intentionally allowed space to breathe — creating moments of calm and clarity that link the entrance to the living areas.
Bespoke joinery plays a key role throughout the project. In the living room, smoked wood cabinetry with integrated LED lighting showcases cherished objects while concealing less attractive essentials. In the dining area, additional joinery was designed to blend with the wall colour, subtly connecting the two rooms and creating a more expansive visual flow.
Bathrooms & Upper-Level Spaces
Upstairs, we designed a spa-like bathroom using warm porcelain tiles, brushed brass fittings and a minimal shower screen. Built-in mirrored cabinetry maximises functionality while maintaining a calm, tranquil atmosphere. Soft uplighters positioned at floor level create a gentle glow for evening use.
Even the smallest cloakroom received thoughtful attention, with shell-like tiles chosen to echo the existing mirror. A freestanding toilet and cleverly hidden storage painted to match the walls help maintain the illusion of space in this compact room.
Extending the Functionality of the Home
Beyond the main living areas, we reconfigured the property to include a separate utility room in the garage area and a home office tucked discreetly behind the kitchen — a flexible room that will evolve into a quiet reading nook as the family grows.
The mews house, designed for visiting family and guests, follows the same palette and material language, ensuring a cohesive experience across both properties. Together, the house and mews now form a beautifully unified Claygate family home tailored to modern living.
