Luxurious Loft Extension

Teddington

We had already had the opportunity to work with our client on the downstairs of this property, when we were invited to help with the interior design of their new loft extension. Our objective was to create a luxurious primary suite, with cohesion between the sleeping, dressing and bathing areas.

Moving downstairs, we removed the 1980’s staircase spindles to create a light, cleaner more minimalist “Japandi” design. This enabled us to integrate the new loft stairs with the rest of the house.

On the first floor, we worked collaboratively to design a teen girl’s room that would suit her perfectly and stand the test of time.

"When our client asked us to create a bedroom design for her 17 year old daughter we were keen to work in collaboration to capture her ideas and reflect them in the interior design. As a designer, it is very exciting to have the opportunity to bounce ideas with your client, and our young client had some lovely ideas.."

More About this Luxurious 1930s Loft Conversion in Teddington

Teddington, with its tree-lined avenues, independent cafés and enviable proximity to Bushy Park, has become one of southwest London’s most sought-after residential areas for families seeking space, charm and connectivity. Homes here - especially the solid, well-proportioned 1930s semis and detached properties - lend themselves beautifully to thoughtful renovations. Their generous footprints, deep gardens and strong rooflines create ideal conditions for luxury loft conversions, turning unused attic spaces into elegant primary suites.

This project is a perfect example: a 1930s home in the heart of Teddington transformed through a carefully designed loft extension that now houses a serene master bedroom, beautiful bathroom and bespoke dressing area. We also redesigned the staircase, hallway, landing and teenage daughter’s room below, ensuring a cohesive, elevated flow throughout the upper levels of the property.

Our Role in Reimagining the Loft & Upper Floors

When the owners decided to expand into the loft, they invited us to create a luxury master suite that felt harmonious, practical and deeply calming. Beginning with a detailed review of the architectural plans, we assessed where the space was under-utilised and how to reconfigure the layout for maximum efficiency and elegance.

Storage was critical. Loft conversions - particularly in 1930s homes - often feature awkward roof pitches, dormers and transitional ceiling heights. By analysing the existing footprint with precision, we identified a little-used niche above the staircase. This became the foundation for a completely reimagined dressing room with bespoke wardrobe space designed down to the last centimetre.

Every aspect of the suite - sleeping, bathing and dressing - was designed together, ensuring complete cohesion in palette, mood and function.

The Architectural Charm of 1930s Homes in Teddington

1930s homes are especially prized in Teddington due to their: excellent structural integrity, large, symmetrical rooms, generous loft spaces ideal for conversion, original features that blend beautifully with contemporary updates and strong connections to gardens and the outdoors.

Their lofts often offer exciting potential: dramatic rooflines, unexpected volume and the opportunity to create sanctuary-like primary suites above the main living areas. This project embraces the beauty of the era while delicately modernising it with a soft, natural palette and crafted details worthy of a luxury retreat.

A Nature-Inspired Master Bedroom Beneath the Roofline

The new primary bedroom sits beneath a complex, unconventional ceiling profile created by a standard dormer at the rear and a rising pitch towards the centre of the house. To visually soften these varied angles, we drenched the walls and ceiling in Little Greene Pale Stone Green - a gentle, enveloping tone that brings serenity while disguising peaks and troughs.

A stunning Chinoiserie wallpaper was introduced behind the bed - a subtle tribute to both the 1930s origins of the house and our client’s Asian heritage. The combination of greens, soft blues and organic motifs reflect the sweeping natural landscapes of nearby Bushy Park, reinforcing a connection to the outdoors that runs through the entire scheme. The result is a calming retreat designed for rest, privacy and beauty.

A Beautiful Bathroom With Spa-Inspired Materials

The colour story continues seamlessly into the new bathroom, where the green palette is paired with sandy-toned terrazzo marble tiles to evoke a grounded, natural feel. Fixtures and finishes were chosen for both luxury and longevity, ensuring the bathroom feels timeless rather than trend-driven. Warm underfloor heating, carefully layered lighting and tactile materials provide comfort and elegance in equal measure.

Bespoke Dressing Area With Thoughtful Storage

To complement the master bedroom, we created a tailored dressing space. By repositioning the staircase subtly and reclaiming unused areas of the loft footprint, we carved out space for full-height wardrobes, concealed storage and a well-lit dressing zone. Every element was designed bespoke - from the internal configuration of drawers to the external finishes - ensuring the suite feels harmonious, balanced and highly functional.

Hall, Stairs & Landing: A Cohesive Architectural Journey

The staircase and landings were also redesigned to complete the transition between floors. The original 1980s staircase lacked character and did not sit comfortably within the architecture of the house. We removed the dated spindles and introduced a minimal, Japandi-inspired design that brings lightness and modernity to the space.

The landing features natural coir carpeting and a sculptural Tom Raffield light, continuing the project’s thread of organic textures and handcrafted details. We also transformed the teenage daughter’s bedroom below, creating a welcoming, stylish space that complements the home’s new aesthetic.

Challenges & Solutions in Loft Conversions

1930s loft conversions come with well-known challenges: uneven ceiling heights, awkward pitches and dormer transitions, limited natural light in certain areas, constrained storage options and integrating new levels with older staircases. Through careful planning, intelligent layout revisions and creative material choices, we addressed each of these constraints and transformed the loft into an elegant, cohesive, highly functional suite.
