Nestling in the Chiltern Hills, this beautiful property is surrounded by a large country garden and blessed with a spectacular view overlooking a wooded valley. The new open plan kitchen is designed around socialising and opens out onto the garden to make the most of the location.

More About This Buckinghamshire Country Home Renovation: A Warm and Welcoming Design for Modern Living

Set in the rolling Chiltern Hills, this beautiful Buckinghamshire renovation reflects the timeless appeal of country living while embracing thoughtful contemporary design. Surrounded by a generous garden and enjoying sweeping views across a wooded valley, the property offered wonderful potential long before the renovation began. The owners envisioned a more sociable, open-plan layout that would connect the interior to its idyllic surroundings and create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for gatherings with friends and family.

Working closely with Decorbuddi designer Jo Miller, the homeowners embarked on a complete reimagining of the interior design, transforming it into a calm and characterful Buckinghamshire retreat. From architectural changes to the finest decorative details, every decision was guided by the desire to enhance light, flow and comfort while retaining the charm of a traditional country home.

A Seamless Open-Plan Kitchen for Entertaining

The heart of this renovation was the transformation of the old extension into a generous, light-filled kitchen and dining space. The original layout felt dark and disconnected from the garden, so Jo reconfigured the interior to create a sociable open-plan environment that would support relaxed entertaining. A new roof lantern was installed to draw in natural daylight, softening the atmosphere and bringing a sense of openness to the entire room.

Oversized pendants above the dining table add drama and balance, their scale perfectly suited to the new proportions of the space. Throughout the kitchen, a calm palette of soft blues, warm neutrals, natural stone and subtle organic textures creates a gentle visual rhythm. The island and dresser, colour-matched for harmony, subtly unite the cooking and entertaining zones while complementing the rural surroundings.

The design emphasises the connection between the home and its landscape. Glass doors open directly onto the south-facing terrace, allowing the interior to flow effortlessly outdoors and making the most of the stunning valley setting.

Country Materials and Textures That Elevate the Architecture

Renovating a period property requires careful consideration of materials, and this project demonstrates how the right choices can breathe new life into a historic home. The dark slate flooring that once dominated the space was replaced with elegant limestone laid continuously throughout the open-plan area. The lighter tone and soft texture enhance the sense of space and introduce a natural, timeless aesthetic that suits a traditional Buckinghamshire cottage perfectly.

A new chimney breast and beam were added to house the Aga, creating an architectural anchor that brings authenticity back into the room. Above and around the Aga, simple wooden shelving provides both practical storage and a place to display the owner’s ceramics and glassware. These personal pieces add warmth and individuality, turning a functional space into one that tells a story.

A carefully designed birch-ply panelled wall sits behind the dresser, adding depth and craftsmanship while subtly linking the kitchen to the rest of the cottage.

Thoughtful Utility and Boot Room Design for Everyday Country Living

Cottages and small country homes in Buckinghamshire often need more practical storage than their original layouts allow, especially for busy households and country lifestyles. Jo gave the same level of attention to the boot room and utility areas as to the main living spaces. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry was fitted to maximise every inch, painted to harmonise with the kitchen while maintaining a sense of continuity throughout the home.

Tongue-and-groove panelling, classic hardware, and a simple shelf above the butler sink evoke traditional country style while ensuring the space is highly functional. Washing appliances are neatly concealed, and durable materials make these hardworking rooms as enjoyable to use as they are beautiful to look at.

A Living Room Refreshed for Comfort and Warmth

In line with the clients’ wishes, the renovation continues in phases, allowing the homeowners to enjoy each part of the transformation at a comfortable pace. The living room has been refreshed with new colour, updated furniture and carefully chosen décor. With its gentle palette, layered textures and inviting furniture layout, the space now reflects the same relaxed elegance found in the kitchen. Future plans include updating the bedrooms and bathroom, but there is no rush - the cottage already feels like a deeply comforting place to live.

What began as a tired and outdated property has become a warm, character-rich Buckinghamshire home that embraces modern living while honouring its rural setting. The result is a welcoming and uplifting environment, perfect for family life and entertaining.
