Tonbridge New Build
Tonbridge interior designer Laura Nicolson shares her latest project:
Tonbridge New Build Interior Design Project
Our clients purchased this new build property off plan, and called us in to design the living room and master bedroom so that they would be ready to furnish key rooms and move in as soon as the build was completed.
There were very few architectural details designed into the house. No cornices, dado rails or ceiling roses, for example. The fireplace in the living room and the fitted wardrobes in the bedroom were the only fixed elements chosen by the developers. Our clients wanted to retain this modern, clean and uncluttered aesthetic, balanced with just enough softness to generate a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The starting point was to create a look and feel for the living room that would flow throughout the house.
The living room is designed to be a predominantly adult space with large TV and home bar, for entertaining friends and family. There is an open-plan living area elsewhere for the children to play.
Our objective was to create a relaxed, bright and airy living space with a contemporary edge. Making the most of the lovely south-facing aspect, we chose a calm blue colour palette, with pops of sunny yellow to achieve this effect.
The rug is a key element, adding a first layer of pattern and texture, breaking up the sea of grey carpet. We then combined a carefully considered collection of colours, patterns and materials to add warmth and interest.
We sourced a beautiful drinks cupboard and built additional shelves for bottles and glasses, to create a complete bar area. Both this and the TV unit are made of wood to bring in an additional natural material.
Decorbuddi interior designer Laura Nicolson, drew on her background as a textile and surface pattern designer, to bring together the perfect collection of cushions and soft furnishings. These are complemented by the warm brass and subtle gold she chose for the metallic details.
The master bedroom is a large but somewhat awkward space with low coombed ceiling and north-facing aspect. The wardrobes had already been built in, leaving limited options for the positioning of the furniture.
The headboard is the key feature, neatly designed to meet the first line of the ceiling, drawing the eye and softening the space. The super king bed is perfectly proportioned to fit the length of the room and is in-keeping with the luxurious look and feel of a boutique hotel. It also enables the children to climb into bed in the mornings for cuddles and stories.
Maximising storage was important. We added a chest of drawers by the window, storage ottoman at the base of the bed, and drawers in the bedside tables to help keep the room clear of clutter and maintain the peaceful atmosphere.
Smart lighting is in place to control the low level lighting on the bedsides and dressing tables
We added a dressing table between the two wardrobes to create a complete dressing area.
The soft teal colour palette flows from the blues of the living room, with additional touches of pink in the cushions and shades.
Client Testimonial:
“We decided to seek the help of Decorbuddi when we moved into our new build house in Kent. It was a complete blank space where we needed to buy lots of new furniture and we didn’t know where to start. We were assigned the help of Laura who helped us with two rooms; bedroom and lounge. She talked to us about what we wanted and then put together a plan with layouts and a range of colour schemes, fabrics and ideas to start the process. We felt she very quickly found what our style was and tapped into the look that we wanted for both rooms. We are so happy with the outcome for both rooms and are really impressed with the personal service and the level of skill and knowledge we got from Laura. We now love spending time in the rooms that Decorbuddi has helped us with and regularly comment on how lovely they look and feel to be in.We would definitely recommend their service.” Laura
