Dutch Barn Style Garden Room
A disaster was turned to advantage when the bottom of this large garden was decimated by a fire in the heat of summer. The area had never really been used for anything other than a compost heap. The owners decided to seize the moment and create a separate social space for themselves and their three adult children.
They were instantly attracted to the beautiful arched ceiling of this Dutch barn style garden room. The curved gambrel style roof adds ceiling height in the interior and and blends into the garden outside.
Permitted Development
Working within permitted development guidelines, Decorbuddi Interior designer Juliet Elliott planned the layout to make the most of the space without requiring planning permission.
The interior design objective was to create a party space that could be enjoyed in any weather. Juliet carefully zoned the footprint into three separate sections. The result is a multi-functional area that is in constant use.
The interior was designed to flow into the garden and the garden to flow inside. The addition of a bi-fold door and bi-fold window enabled the interior to be accessed from both sides.
The family are fabulous hosts and do an enormous amount of entertaining. As such, it was important to build in all the essential utilities. The open plan kitchen area was designed to incorporate a large fridge freezer.
Bi-Fold Window
The bi-fold window provides the perfect bar area with a view to the interior. The pergola keeps the dining area dry, even in a wet British Summer.
“At one point we were concerned about the level of investment that we were making but it has turned out to be very good value. It is in constant use. We were down here every weekend entertaining during the Euros. The positioning of the screen is perfect.”
Juliet designed the media unit to to combine painted and un-painted wooden elements. Natural wood was chosen for the flooring also, to reflect the surrounding natural environment.
The dark colourway is a masculine touch to balance the more feminine furnishings, creating a harmonious scheme that appeals to all the family.
A leafy paper was the natural choice for the bathroom interior. The desired look was more fun than formal and so Juliet selected a tropical design, complete with parakeets to set the tone.
