20th Century Villa

Adding character to a modern house in Wimbledon. Our brief focussed on the drawing room, open-plan kitchen and drawing room.

The scope of work involved adding contemporary classic architectural details: design of panelling, bespoke joinery to include living room bookshelves, utility room, flooring, wood-burner, lighting and architectural hardware.

More About This Contemporary Villa Renovation in Wimbledon

A Calm and Elegant Redesign for Modern Living, this detached villa in Wimbledon was undergoing a complete reconfiguration to create a light-filled, contemporary home with a calm, timeless aesthetic. Our clients approached us to help them bring cohesion, comfort and understated elegance to their newly renovated spaces, focusing on the new open-plan kitchen and living area, the orangery dining room, and the main drawing room. With the build already underway, our role was to guide the design vision, refine the layout and coordinate the interior details that anchor the scheme in classic contemporary style.

A Soft, Neutral Palette Inspired by Modern Classic Design

The design brief centres around a serene neutral palette - gentle creams, soft greys, muted beiges and pale blue accents, to create a refined yet inviting home. The transitional style combines modern clean lines with classic architectural elements, achieving a sense of quiet luxury and effortless comfort. Texture plays a key role: natural linens, wool rugs, refined upholstery and warm timber finishes all contribute to the subtle layering that gives the scheme depth without overwhelming the senses.

This style is particularly well suited to Wimbledon’s contemporary villas, where abundant natural light and generous proportions are enhanced by calm colours and sophisticated detailing.

A Reconfigured Kitchen and New Orangery

The heart of the renovation is the new kitchen, designed and supplied by Tom Howley. The kitchen flows into the orangery - a beautiful, light-drenched dining area that connects seamlessly to the garden. The reconfiguration brings together what were previously separate spaces, creating a sociable open-plan living environment.

We advised on paint colours, flooring, window treatments, architectural details and lighting to ensure all elements integrate harmoniously with the Tom Howley kitchen. The orangery serves as an elegant dining space with views to the garden, and the palette is being carefully chosen to support this indoor - outdoor connection. Soft blues, chalky whites and natural textures complement the greenery visible through the glazed structure.

To the front of the kitchen we helped develop the new utility room defined by glazed internal partitioning - introducing both practicality and a contemporary architectural feature that maintains light flow.

Establishing Flow Through Layout, Lighting and Materials

A key focus of the project was ensuring that the kitchen, living room and orangery work together as a cohesive whole. We defined the layout with architectural drawings, selecting furniture that suits the proportions of the room, and advising on the placement of seating, dining and relaxation areas to best suit the family’s lifestyle.

Lighting was planned with equal care. A combination of architectural lighting, pendants, wall lights and soft table lighting create a warm and flexible ambience appropriate for both day-to-day life and entertaining. Electrical layouts, switch positioning and socket selection were all designed to enhance functionality as well as the interior aesthetic.

Throughout the ground floor we introduced contemporary classic architectural details - updated skirting, coving, ceiling roses, architraves and doors. These elements subtly elevate the interior and add character to this modern Wimbledon home.

A Calm Drawing Room with Layers of Comfort

The drawing room, accessed from the new kitchen area, is designed as a peaceful counterpart to the open-plan living space. Layers of soft neutrals, muted blues and warm textures create a cocooning atmosphere, while carefully selected furniture balances comfort with modern elegance.

Bespoke joinery provides essential storage and display space. The new built-in cabinetry, designed to echo the language of the kitchen and orangery, includes bookshelves and space for media equipment. Architectural hardware, lighting and refined window treatments were all selected to complement the calm, contemporary feel.

Connecting the Interior to the Garden

The orangery forms a beautiful bridge between the interior and the garden. The design scheme enhances this connection through natural materials, soft transitional tones and an emphasis on simplicity. The result is a serene dining space that feels closely tied to the greenery outside - supporting a lifestyle centred around relaxed, elegant living.

A Fully Supported Renovation Process

As with all of our renovation projects, we coordinated closely with contractors throughout the build. Our responsibility included layout refinement, finishing details, lighting and electrical planning, furniture sourcing, soft furnishings, joinery design and window treatments. Once the build was complete we oversaw installation and styling to ensure every element aligns with the design vision.

This calm, contemporary Wimbledon villa has become a beautifully balanced home - combining classic detailing, modern comfort and a thoughtful connection to the garden and surrounding landscape.
