The Cotswolds Cheese Company

A contemporary update for an established Cotswolds food business

Founded by Jon and Lisa Goodchild in 2006, The Cotswold Cheese Company has grown from one much-loved Moreton-in-Marsh shop into a successful family business with further stores in Stow-on-the-Wold and Burford, as well as an online presence.

Interior designer Jo Miller has supported the family from the beginning. For the Moreton shop refresh, her role was to build on the character and strong identity the owners had already created: retaining its welcoming, independent spirit while making the interior feel cleaner, more contemporary and easier to shop.

The layout was reworked using repurposed cabinetry from a former wine area, alongside selected original timber dressers that link the refreshed shop to its history. A clearer display arrangement, warm red feature table and layers of neutral materials, antique finds and artisanal pieces create a distinctive country-contemporary scheme: in keeping with the Cotswolds setting, but avoiding the expected “Cotswold beige” look.

"Jo has been part of The Cotswold Cheese Company’s journey from the beginning. She understood that the heart of the business was already there: our family feel, our love of good food and the character our customers know us for. Her role was to enhance that, bringing a fresher, more contemporary feel to the shop while keeping it recognisably ours."

More About The Cotswolds Cheese Company Project

Commercial design that strengthens an existing brand

For independent commercial businesses, interior design can be a powerful tool for strengthening a brand: expressing what makes it distinctive, encouraging customers to enter, creating a positive shopping experience and supporting the practical realities of daily trading.

In this case, The Cotswold Cheese Company was already a highly successful, established business, with a loyal customer base, award-winning product range and global reputation. Interior designer Jo Miller has worked with the owners since they took on the business in 2006. In this latest project, the brief was to refresh the original Moreton-in-Marsh shop. Jo created a more contemporary setting while retaining the warmth, quality and familiarity customers associate with the business.

Jo used the existing architecture and selected design elements of the shop as a starting point, editing and evolving rather than replacing the interior. The new red table brings energy and confidence to the centre of the space, while the mix of softened neutrals, aged timber, woven baskets and carefully chosen antique pieces create an authentic backdrop, reaching back to the origins of dairy farming in the local area.

It gives the product the right stage. The cheeses, seasonal accompaniments and generous displays remain the visual focus, while the decorative details makes browsing more pleasurable, the layout easier to navigate and distinctly The Cotswold Cheese Company.

Decorbuddi’s commercial design service is particularly suited to owner-led businesses with a strong point of view. We work collaboratively, respecting what owners and their teams already know about their customers, products and brand, then bring specialist design expertise to translate that into a cohesive physical environment.

For The Cotswold Cheese Company, this meant creating a interior design that is both more current and more characterful to support the continued evolution of this renowned brand.
