"The design aesthetic is founded on the Mid-century style our client first encountered when staying at the house his Grandfather built in Austria. He has very fond memories of Summers spent there as a child. This is combined with both older antiques and contemporary pieces to create a more personal style, tailored to our client. "

More About This Edwardian Townhouse Renovation in Chiswick

Set within a handsome Edwardian townhouse in the heart of Chiswick, this full renovation explores the rich design potential of blending mid-century style with Edwardian architecture. Through thoughtful curation and a confident use of colour, we created a contemporary interior that celebrates the elegance of a period home while introducing the warmth, clarity and character of mid-century modern design. The result is a sophisticated, joyful living space that feels rooted in the property’s history and uplifted by modern comfort.

Interior Design & Implementation Services Provided

This was a complete renovation covering every room in the house. Our work spanned design concepts, layout planning, lighting schemes and detailed joinery designs through to furniture sourcing, artwork curation and full implementation. We collaborated closely with the client to uncover the design language that resonated most deeply - a refined mix of Edwardian heritage and mid-century influences. Our team managed contractor coordination, sourcing, purchasing and styling to ensure that each detail, from colour choices to bespoke seating, contributed to a cohesive and beautifully balanced whole.

Rooms Included in This Project

This renovation encompassed the entire house, from the kitchen, snug and formal living room on the ground floor to the cloakroom, hallway, stairs and landing. Upstairs, we designed the master bedroom and ensuite, as well as a luxurious guest bedroom and bathroom. The project also extended into the loft space, where we transformed the children’s rooms into playful, character-filled spaces. Every area was considered as part of a unified narrative - a mid-century modern interior within an Edwardian home, enriched with colour, pattern and luxurious texture.

Design Style & Inspiration

The design draws on the client’s connection to Switzerland and his affinity for mid-century interiors, merging this with the decorative proportions and colours of the Edwardian period. We used clean lines and sculptural forms to reference classic mid-century design, while the home’s original features - high ceilings, generous windows and elegant detailing - provided a graceful architectural backdrop. Expressive colours, playful patterns and luxurious textures bring a contemporary twist to this fusion, creating an interior that feels both timeless and personal. This project demonstrates how beautifully mid-century modern style can be blended with Edwardian heritage for a home full of depth and character.

Materials, Colours & Finishes

The colour palette is bold yet sophisticated, with dramatic tones that honour both the mid-century aesthetic and the Edwardian envelope. In the kitchen, deep charcoal cabinetry sits alongside ribbed glass, curated artwork and clever layered lighting to create an atmospheric yet functional space. Across the house, rich organic tones, warm woods, burnished metals and tactile fabrics bring a sense of identity and comfort. Each finish was chosen to support the idea of a modernised Edwardian house with mid-century character, where heritage and contemporary design work in harmony.

Furniture, Lighting & Sourcing

Furnishings were selected to evoke the client’s memories of mid-century Swiss interiors - pieces with sculptural silhouettes, warm wood and thoughtful detailing. We designed a bespoke banquette for the kitchen to maximise space and create an intimate, social dining area perfect for gatherings. Lighting played a pivotal role in shaping mood, with layered illumination highlighting architectural details and the client’s standout art collection. A curated gallery wall became a central feature, drawing together treasured pieces and giving them renewed place in the home. Every item was sourced to celebrate the synergy of mid-century modern design within an Edwardian setting.

Challenges & Solutions

The creative challenge lay in achieving a seamless dialogue between the home’s Edwardian bones and the client’s deep connection with mid-century style. By focusing on proportion, layering and materiality, we were able to honour the architectural integrity of the property while confidently introducing mid-century elements. Close collaboration with the client ensured that each decision aligned with his personal story, resulting in a home that feels deeply expressive. The juxtaposition of saturated colour, clean-lined furniture and period detailing shows how successful mixing mid-century and Edwardian style can be when approached with sensitivity.

Why Edwardian Homes Suit Mid-Century Influence

Edwardian houses offer generous ceiling heights, strong natural light and decorative character - qualities that pair beautifully with the warmth, simplicity and sculptural lines of mid-century modern design. When thoughtfully executed, this combination results in a fresh, contemporary interior that respects the home’s heritage while feeling unmistakably modern. Chiswick, with its tree-lined streets and abundance of period architecture, provides an ideal setting for this refined blend of styles, allowing homeowners to create spaces that feel both timeless and deeply personal.
