Edwardian Family Home
Our client moved into a large Edwardian house which was in need of total renovation to turn it into a warm, and welcoming family home. Her husband is a builder and so was very comfortable designing the architectural space and structure but called on us to help with everything decorative from colours, furniture and accessories to flooring and window treatments whilst ensuring the house flowed.
Bright colours, were central to the project. This started from the very beginning with the introduction of a bright yellow front door, a zingy stair runner and a hint of crazy wallpaper in the downstairs bathroom.
The yellow thread continued with our suggestion of a fun and fabulous yellow tiled splashback, in the beautiful Thomas Davies Kitchen.
The personal finishing touches which make this such a unique and individual scheme, include the “Pow Pots” you can see here tucked in the corner or the works-surface, sourced from an independent maker found on instagram. Combining a grey neutral base with a splash of the signature yellow they are a perfect addition. Spot them on the sideboard on the opposite side of the room also.
Another aspect of our brief was to bring the outside in. We added an abundance of house-plants to link to the garden. A sofa, table and lamp in the corner create a calm and comfortable area to relax in. Artwork was sourced by the client on holiday in Spain.
Our client has lots of lovely photos of her gorgeous family, kept together in a gallery wall at the far end of the kitchen. Painting a block of yellow on one wall added a further pop of colour without committing too heavily to this bold colour statement, and provides the perfect place for an easily changeable photo montage.
Moving to the front, our brief was to create a warm and cosy family living room. It was the one space our client liked the idea of a darker scheme, balanced by the light of the long luxurious curtains, white shutters and ceiling. The additional pops of dusky pinks through the armchair, rug and artwork retain the fun element which runs throughout the rest of the house.
On the first floor we were briefed by their nine and six year old daughter’s to design two very different bedrooms, that reflected their individual personalities.
The six year old wanted unicorns, pink and leopard print. We sourced some wonderful wallpaper, accessories and prints as well as creating a reading corner and arts and crafts station. We are fans of repurposing items from around the home and so re-fitted a Victorian fireplace found downstairs in the original kitchen.
The nine year old loves rainbows and so once again we added a splash of this design through wallpaper as well as colourful pom-poms, art and bedding.
The key for each room was to choose timeless designs for the furniture, flooring and curtains to allow for changes to be made relatively easily as they grow and their tastes change.
Moving upstairs, the carpet flows from stripes to a softer grey tone, combined with fresh white woodwork, keeping the pops of yellow to the flexible details of accessories and artwork.
The master bedroom and en-suite, uses the same dusky pinks and blues of the living space that our client loves, but in a lighter shade. Painting the walls and woodwork the same colour helped to create a feeling of space and height. Elegant wall lights and simple floating bedside tables, enhance the feeling of clutter-free space, yet further.
The bathroom design details include a beautiful pattern tile across the whole of the back wall, tiled all the way up to the ceiling to, again, enhance the sense of space.
The project was made extra special by the clients enthusiasm in using products from small independent brands, and is something we love to introduce to our projects to make them truly unique and special to each client.
This included beautiful feather juju hats, seen here just outside the bathroom in a delicate shade of blue helped to connect the two spaces.
What our Client Said
“Jackie was brilliant helping us with the colours, furniture and interior details that we just didn’t have the skill or time to do for ourselves. The best thing was that she really listened to exactly what we wanted and brought it all together so easily. We absolutely love our home.” Charlotte
